2 Weeks And Counting

Posted in Nonsense, Tori with tags , , , on February 28, 2012 by Bob

We are around the two week mark. It is actually about 17 days or so. I am not counting down to St. Patrick’s Day. I am counting down to the arrival of Tori’s baby brother. If you haven’t noticed, I haven’t been around much lately. We have been doing a lot of last minute prep and we have all collectively been fighting colds and tiredness. I think overall Tori has been the healthiest the last few weeks up until this week. Last night she spiked a fever of 103. It went down but it is back. Poor little bug. She is having a rough time breaking it. This is her first real “sick” with fever this long. I have been spoiling her a lot lately and since she is a smart baby, I think she is deliberately keeping her fever up so that daddy spoils her more than I usually would.

I went off track. 2 weeks until the new arrival. I am already exhausted. Mrs. Voices is exhausted, and she should be. We think we are at a place though where the baby can come and we would be ready. Tori is moved into her new room and I just have a load of laundry or two left for the bassinet and what not for the little guy. What we still aren’t done with yet, is picking a name. We are getting closer though. We are finally starting to come together on some names. We are not going to have any of the names I really want but, I guess that is ok. Is it acceptable to wait until he can talk and just let him pick his own name? That might be even worse.

Hmm. I am really at a loss for what I was going to write about next. Well, just want to let you know I am all still here and just be ready for exciting news to come soon. No, it won’t be that I got a new job paying me millions of dollars. If I ever do have millions of dollars, just remember, I will not forget all my loyal readers and I will send you all at least a dollar. Generous ain’t I?

What’s In A Name

Posted in Nonsense with tags , , , , on December 26, 2011 by Bob

Other than an identity, it is just something that you are called. It really doesn’t make up who you are … or does it? Some folks say that your name dictates who you will be and what career you will have. I agree to a point. If you give your child a really dorky name, he will live in your basement until he is 40 playing video games. If you give him a decent name, he will move out as soon as he can and be normal.

Jackie and I are trying to come up with a name for our future little one. It is not easy. Tori’s name came to us pretty easily. For this little guy’s name, we are having a bit more trouble. We each seem to have too many requirements that the other one doesn’t agree with. He is due around St. Patrick’s Day so at first we were thinking about an Irish name because of that. Turns out, Jackie doesn’t like the names that I come up with and I don’t like the ones that she comes up with.

We don’t want anything that ends with son, sin, sen, san etc, because it would sound to weird with our last name. It also can’t start with a T because I don’t like the names starting with the same letter or the names sounding the same. Jackie has to have a name that works well with a shortened nickname. It also has to go with the middle name we are thinking about. And it has to be a boy’s name. Yeah, see how many restrictions there are to this? I know we will come up with something but, man, I thought the second time around would be easier. We just need a name that jumps out at us. That calls to us. That says, HEY PICK ME! Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone?

It’s Amateur Night

Happy St. Patty’s day to all. And welcome to amateur night. That’s right, tonight thousands of inexperienced drinkers will be hitting the pubs and taverns all over the country because it is St. Patrick’s day. Today is the day where the Irish stereotype of drunken mess is portrayed by every nationality just because they think they should. What better reason to go out drinking and get sloppy drunk than a religious holiday? Granted, it isn’t as big a religious holiday as Easter or Christmas, but I don’t go getting blasted on those days either. I personally wait to get my serious drinking on until the Ascension. I just don’t see getting rid of a bunch of snakes a good reason to drink. But enough of that.

I remember when I worked in bars, this was one of the days I hated to work. Most of the people who came out were there for the sole purpose to get drunk. Most of them wouldn’t even remember the night or how much they drank or what they ate. I will have to admit though, that it was one of the most amusing nights to work. Other holidays spark mass drinking but this day really brings out the idiots.

Bad Irish brogues are just one of the horrible parts of this day. Mine included. Yes, I occasionally annoy others by speaking like that. But not ALL night. Well, not any more at least. The other amusing things are the names that guys come up with to use as pick-up lines:

“Nice to meet you,  Pat McGroin … feel free”

“Me name’s Everest McKinley, that way lass, you can mount Everest or McKinley, whichever you prefer.”

Ok, so maybe I used those or stole them from someone else and used them … that isn’t the point. The point is, that people are just fun to laugh at on St. Patty’s day as they get fall down drunk and turn the color of the clothes they are wearing.

Myself, I am not going out to a bar tonight. Too many people. I am going to go home, have the corned beef I am crock potting today, maybe watch Darby O’Gill and the Little People followed by Leprechaun. I need to stay home with my little girl and teach her the true meaning of St. Patrick’s day and make sure she knows how to pronounce the 2 most important words on St. Pat’s … “Jay-mu-son” and “Bush-mill”.

Gotta go, need to hit up the Irish Pub across the parking lot for some Shepard’s Pie and maybe a wee bit of Irish cheer.

Erin Go Braugh!

Until next time, remember … “You’re looking at Brian of Knocknasheega, king of all the Leprechauns!”
