I Got Dirty At Church

Posted in Holiday, Nonsense with tags , , , , , , , , , on February 22, 2012 by Bob

Well, just a little bit. It is Ash Wednesday. For those of you that don’t know what that is, it is NOT an Evil Dead marathon. It is when Catholics and some other denominations as well, go and have ashes on their forehead reminding us that we were made from dirt and to dirt we will return. I am what I call a recovering Catholic. I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic grade school and Jr. High. Then I went to a public high school. There were a lot of things even back then that made me curious about why the Catholics were the right and only true church (in their opinion), but these days, as an adult, there are a lot of things I don’t agree with because of me being a grown up. I am not going to get into all that right now. I want to talk about the experience.

Because of what I mentioned above, we are not avid church goers. We aren’t really even Christers (pronounced kree-stirs), or those that only go at Christmas and Easter. We do go for weddings and the occasional baptism and we go now and then so we can get our babies baptized. Mrs. Voices is more Catholic than I am so there is that.

A while back, one of my favorite blogs WhatImenat2say, warned me that some of the wording has changed in the Catholic mass. This was disturbing to me. While I am not a big church goer, I am still looking for the structure that the mass taught me as a child. I don’t like change. I should have paid more attention to that blog post because Mrs. Voices and I kept saying the wrong things. I needed notes. Although, that wasn’t nearly as embarrassing as taking Tori to her first mass as a talking 16 month old.

When the pipe organ started playing, Tori danced. That was cute. When people started singing, Tori broke out in “la la la la la”. That was also cute. Then, Tori wanted to go to mama. I passed her off and Tori started playing with mommy’s necklace … the “pretties”. Then Tori started doing her next favorite thing. She started pulling on Mrs. Voices’ shirt collar. The Mrs. was able to pull it back up in time. Nothing fell out. The problem was, is that it was very quiet at this particular time during the mass. Tori learned a new word a while back. She pulls at mommy’s shirt and says “NIPPLE” really loud. I laughed a little. So did the people around us. I love going to church with children.

In other news, Whitney Houston is still dead and the flags are back up to full staff. Eating Girl Scout cookies will not cause your daughter to become a homosexual and you will not have to have an abortion and you will not have a sex change operation, unless of course you are a republican living in Indiana.

It was a long 40 days for this little blogger. For all those that gave up something for Lent …

How To Splurge After Lent (specifically for having given up Pop and Fast Food)

1. On Sunday, open 2 liter bottle of Coke®

2. Drink said 2 liter bottle of Coke®

3. Go to dinner and drink 4 more cans of Coke®

4. After Easter dinner, stop at McDonald’s and order 3 Big Macs, 2 Cheese Burgers, 20 piece Chicken McNugget, 2 Fruit Smoothies and a large Diet Coke

5. Get home, go to sleep.

6. Wake up at 3 am, take 3 Alka Seltzers, go back to sleep.

I Almost Made It

Getting this one in just under the wire.

a little more than a week of Lent left and I fell just a little bit. I haven’t drank, or is it drunk, any pop so far but, I had fast food last night. It was pretty much unavoidable. It was a VERY long day at work after a not so good night of sleep and I had work I had to do at home. I had wife stop on the way home and get something. I felt guilty about it, for about 10 seconds. I got a frosty instead of a coke and I still haven’t eaten meat on Fridays. I think that part is the best I have done ever. I usually forget and have an egg and sausage sandwich or something on Fridays.

Oh well, I am sure all will be good. Tori is also feeling a little better so hopefully she will sleep better tonight.

I Think I Gave Up More Than I Could Chew

Posted in Food, Nonsense with tags , , , , on March 15, 2011 by Bob

It is a week into Lent. I decided to give up not one, but 2 things this year. I gave up pop the last few years, so I decided to up the ante a little bit. I gave up fast food as well. Now, this sounded like a great idea at the time. It wasn’t. Between work, and a 5 month old, and a dog … giving up fast food all together is insane and next to impossible.

I should have thought it out a little bit better and qualified exactly what fast food was. I could have specified that I was giving up McD’s, BK, TB, Wendy’s, etc, etc. That way I could have kept things such as Chipotle, Subway, Jimmy John’s and things like that which are a tad healthier than the others. I mean, i screwed myself out of an egg mcmuffin for the next month and a half. THe wife also says that I can’t have a shamrock shake OR Sonic beverages. I am very very saddened by this. I am still tryign to fight the beverages thing.

It is getting increasingly harder to find things to eat at lunch. What I have concluded is that I need to start bringing my lunch to work. The upside of this is that I will hopefully save a lot of money and I can buy a new car. It will be a long 40 days is all I can say.

And We Have Entered The Clingy Phase

Last night we took Tori out for her first Lenten Fish Fry. She didn’t eat the fish of course She also met her newest BFF, our friend Danielle. They got along so well that Danielle even decided to share her beer. (not really but it was the cutest picture)

Today, she is not getting along well with anyone. If she were a few years older, we would be calling her a little brat. She is just crying all day if we are more than 2 feet away from her. She won’t take a nap, she won’t do anything. Once we pick her up, or walk near her and smile, she is much better. We knew this was coming. We knew there would be days like this. We just wish we knew how to appease her.

We had wanted to go out today and do a number of things, go a few places, see a few friends. She is NOT going to cooperate enough for that today unfortunately. We did manage to keep her quite long enough to clip her nails though so that is a bonus. So, it looks like the taking Tori out 2 nights in a row is not going to happen this weekend.

Mommy is doing her best. So I am going to go up and get ready to go to poker night instead.

By the way, we went to the Cottage in Crystal Lake for the fish fry last night. It was pretty good. All you can eat, not greasy, not dry. I had to have iced tea because I gave up pop for Lent. That means I had to do my shot of Jameson straight up with no chaser.

Ok, have a good night all. See you tomorrow.
